1. The numbers and letters you find on the vintage dolls' left buttocks, under their arms, etc. are meaningless. These are a mold I.D. marks only, and they have no significance to collectors. Also, the number on the left buttocks does not determine what 'number' your doll is. 2. The 1966 date found on the doll's lower back is a patent date only -- It is not the date of production. Dates found on the heads are also patent dates only (and have nothing to do with the date of production) 3. The doll or unmarked outfit that was found at a garage sale is 99.99% not a 'prototype' 4. 'Transitional' is a term that refers to dolls that are a mix of #3/#4 ponytail parts or #4/#5 ponytail parts. There is one other original, odd combination I have seen; a Color Magic head on a Francie body. There was a huge overstock of Color Magic heads and Mattel had already switched production to the TNT and Standard Barbie, so my guess is they used some extra Francie bodies with the CM heads. This is the doll Ruth Handler from Mattel is said to have seen in Europe, before she created Barbie. Lilli was a cartoon character in the German 'Bild' newspaper. Considered a rather 'loose girl,' the Lilli doll was created, not as a toy for children, but marketed as a gag gift for men to give their girlfriends (Forever Barbie by M. G. Lord). The 11 1/2" doll on the left is the large Lilli. She is very fragile and not a toy! She is hard to find in nice condition. The doll on the right, of course, is our beloved #1 vintage Barbie who is much more durable. Barbie's original metal hoop earrings have been switched to 'pearls' with nylon posts to prevent any possible damage from metal oxidation. She wears her original black and white swimsuit. To see examples of the small (7 1/2") Bild Lilli, please scroll down to the bottom of my information page on the Ponytail Barbies *******************************The general information
I have chosen to include on these pages is here as a courtesy
to collectors of Vintage and Mod Barbies® and friends.
